Larger than the reduced-scale GT but smaller than the Grand Auditorium, the Grand Concert is Taylor’s most intimate full-scale guitar body shape, perfect for fingerstyle and strumming alike.
This particular custom model is one of just 20 from the 2022 Taylor NAMM event. This model features Double-A Hawaiian Koa at the back and sides - Koa's tone profile blends the midrange of mahogany with the top end of maple. Due to its density, a new Koa guitar tends to start out sounding a little bright and tight, somewhat like maple. But the more a Koa guitar is played, the more the sound opens up, expanding the midrange and rewarding the player with a richer, sweeter, more resonant tone. The Western Red Cedar top is less dense than spruce, and that softness typically translates into a sense of sonic warmth. If Sitka has a full dynamic range, cedar makes quieter tones louder, but it also imposes more of a ceiling on high volume levels driven by an aggressive attack. If one tries to drive a cedar top hard, at a certain point it will reach a volume limit. Typically, players with a lighter touch sound wonderful on a cedar-top guitar, fingerstyle players especially — that lighter touch will be amplified a little more, and one's attack never reaches the ceiling. Flatpickers are likely to hit the ceiling fast, and might be frustrated by an inability to get the tonal output to match their attack.
The patented V-Class bracing is a revolutionary new pattern — a new sonic engine — that marks a major shift away from traditional steel-string bracing patterns. By allowing the soundboard to flex naturally while maintaining rigidity along the center (in the direction of the strings), V-Class helps enhance the volume and sustain. It also creates a more orderly response from the soundboard. Up and down the fretboard, notes are full, true and consistent, with more harmonic agreement. It represents an entirely new design platform that can be adapted to different body styles in different ways to infuse each with a unique sonic personality.
