Gibson '59 Les Paul Standard Unburst VOS Bigsby Nickel Hardware

Only a small number of the original 1959 Les Paul Standards were factory equipped with a Bigsby tailpiece – only about 30%. Not currently a standard offering from Gibson, we worked with our friends at the Gibson Custom shop to create a small run of historically accurate ’59 reissues featuring the Bigsby B7 Vibrato Tailpiece. In that process, we flew to Nashville and hand-selected the figured maple tops for this model from hundreds of sets, meticulously choosing wood grains we felt would showcase that bespoke B7 tailpiece.

This truly custom Les Paul features a Vintage Original Spec finish – Gibson’s process is to hand-spray several layers of genuine nitrocellulose lacquer and follow it with a proprietary hand-buffing to create a gently aged patina. We chose the “Unburst” finish as a nod to Keith Richards’ famous ’59 with Bigsby. Unburst replicates a vintage sunburst in which the red stain has faded away, leaving only the base color darkening to an amber hue around the edges. The cream binding only furthers the vintage aesthetic, designed to replicate a weathered factory burst. However, the hand selected maple top is just the beginning of this guitar’s appeal.

A one-piece mahogany body, chosen for it’s light weight rounds out the resonance of the maple top for that time-honored Les Paul sound. A mahogany Carmelita ’59 style neck (essentially a slightly thinner medium C profile with nice, soft shoulder) outfitted with a beautiful Indian rosewood fingerboard and cellulose nitrate trapezoid inlays completes the 24.75” scale length.

At the neck and bridge you’ll find unpotted Gibson Custombuckers , which were designed to recreate the original PAF pickups Gibson introduced in the 50’s, and are only available new from the Custom Shop. Versatility is the Custombucker calling card – warm, smooth, bright, articulate… the sky is the limit with tonal control here. Gold top hat knobs (two for volume, two for tone), a historic cream switch tip, and aged nickel hardware round out that ever-so-particular look – throw in that Bigsby B7 and you’ve got yourself a seriously unique piece of machinery. This is not one to miss.   

Comes with the original Gibson hardshell case, inspection sheet and warranty, original hangtags, certificate of authenticity and a historically accurate selector switch backplate (ships with Custom Shop backplate installed) as can be seen in photos.
